Wings (1927)

This silent classic stars Clara Bow, Charles “Buddy” Rogers, and Richard Arlen, with a breakout appearance by Gary Cooper. Jack Powell (Rogers) and David Armstrong (Arlen) are two young men living in the same small town, rivaling for the attentions of the same girl.
Set in 1917, the two men enlist as combat pilots as the US joins the war in Europe. They begin training as enemies, become best friends, and are deployed to France together after training.
Meanwhile, girl-next-door Mary (Clara Bow, Hollywood’s original ‘It Girl’) goes to war as an ambulance driver and reunites with Jack, the object of her affection.
Wings is famous for its realistic, breathtaking aerial battles, and it became the model for future aviation films. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the very first Academy Awards presentation in 1929.
The recently rerecorded soundtrack of this silent film features a full orchestra playing the original score by J.S. Zamecnik.
